About this download

The Cozy Granny Square Cardigan is a relaxed, open front cardigan made from classic four round granny squares. Each square has a solid center and a contrasting final round, which gives the finished cardigan a cheerful, patchwork look. The shape is simple and boho, and the pattern covers nine sizes from XS to 5XL in two lengths.

This is a 21 page illustrated PDF crochet pattern. It is not a finished cardigan, and no yarn or printed pages are shipped.

Why this cardigan is beginner friendly

The whole cardigan is built from one square repeated again and again. The squares join into simple rectangular panels, so there is no body shaping, no increases at the sides and no complicated sleeves. If you can make one granny square, you can make this cardigan; it just takes patience.

The pattern gives you both a symbol stitch chart and a written chart. Some people learn faster by looking, others by reading, and here you can choose.

Two lengths, nine sizes

Choose a cropped length of 18 inches for wearing over dresses and high waisted jeans, or a mid length of 26 inches for a cozier layer. Sleeves are 18 inches for every size.

The sizes are measured by bust, as the total body width around the torso: XS 32 inches, S 36, M 44, L 48, XL 56, 2XL 60, 3XL 68, 4XL 72 and 5XL 80. A layout diagram for every size shows exactly how many squares go where.

Two ways to join

You can join as you go, attaching each new square to its neighbors on the final round. Or you can make all the squares first and seam them together. The pattern explains both methods in full, so you can pick the one you enjoy.

Finishing touches

Ridged back loop only edging finishes the cuffs, hem and neckline neatly. Optional square patch pockets add a practical, cozy touch. The front stays open, with no buttons, ties or tassels, so it drapes easily.

What is in the 21 page PDF

Round by round square instructions. Abbreviations in US terms plus a US to UK conversion table. A symbol chart and a written chart. Layout diagrams for every size. Stitch count checks after each round. Front and back panel assembly. Sleeve and cuff construction. Joining guidance for both methods. Ridged edging instructions. Optional pocket instructions. Color placement ideas in three palettes. Measurement, yardage and square count tables. A short FAQ and a completion checklist.

Materials

Medium worsted weight number 4 yarn in your chosen colors, including a contrasting color for the last round of each square. A 5.0 mm hook for the squares and body and a 4.5 mm hook for the edging. A tapestry needle, scissors, stitch markers, a measuring tape and blocking supplies.

Yardage depends on size and length, from about 1,525 yards for XS cropped up to about 3,850 yards for 5XL mid length. The full table is in the PDF.

Gauge matters

One finished four round square should measure 4 by 4 inches after gentle blocking. Every measurement in the pattern is based on that square, so check your gauge before you start. If your square is larger, go down a hook size; if it is smaller, go up.

Making it longer

Add one extra row of squares to the bottom of each body panel to add about 4 inches. You will need extra squares and yarn, and the pattern tells you how to plan for it.

How the download works

After checkout, download the PDF from Purchases and reviews on Etsy or from the Etsy email. Print it or follow it on a tablet. Colors in the photos may look different on your screen and will change with your yarn choice.

Licence in plain words

You may sell the finished pieces you make by hand in small quantities. The PDF pattern itself may not be shared, copied or resold. Finished cardigans may be given as gifts or sold in small quantities.

Who will love this pattern

Granny square fans, boho and cottagecore wardrobes, anyone who wants one pattern in many sizes and makers looking for a satisfying long project for autumn and winter evenings.

Color planning made easy

The pattern includes three palette ideas, but the most reliable approach is simple: choose one main color for every final round and vary the centers. A cream or oatmeal final round ties bright centers together, while a dark final round makes pastel centers pop. Lay your finished squares on the floor before joining to check the balance of colors.

How long will it take?

A four round square takes most people around ten to fifteen minutes once the rhythm sets in. A cropped size small needs fewer squares than a 5XL mid length, so plan on several weeks of relaxed evenings for a larger size. The good news is that squares are portable. Make a few on the bus or while watching a film and the pile grows quickly.
