About this download

This easy crochet shawl pattern is made for people who have never finished a shawl before. It uses a simple two row repeat, every row is written out in full and a complete stitch chart shows you how the shawl should look as it grows. Many popular shawl patterns skip the chart entirely; this one puts it front and center.

The shawl is worked top down from a clear center spine. One row is solid double crochet. The next is an easy openwork row of double crochet and chain spaces. Repeat those two rows and the triangle grows into a light, lacy wrap.

Only four basic stitches

You need chain, slip stitch, single crochet and double crochet. If you know those, you have everything you need. There are no tricky lace stitches to learn and no counting of long repeats.

Built in checkpoints

The stitch count is written at the end of every row, so you always know you are on track. Every ten rows there is a checkpoint table that confirms the shawl is growing correctly. If something is off, you find it after a few rows, not after a few evenings.

Two sizes in one pattern

Stop at Row 40 for the shawlette, about 144 by 42 cm or 56.7 by 16.5 inches after blocking. Keep going to Row 60 for the full shawl, about 216 by 62 cm or 85 by 24.4 inches. Either way, you finish with the same scalloped shell border.

What is in the 13 page PDF

A full stitch chart for the foundation and first rows, with the two row repeat clearly marked and the center spine highlighted. An enlarged border chart that shows exactly where each scallop shell goes, plus a symbol key. Written instructions for every row in US terms, with stitch counts in brackets. A gauge swatch that is actually a mini shawl, with honest help if yours comes out too small or too big. Exact yarn amounts for both sizes. Step by step blocking instructions so the lace opens up and drapes beautifully.

What you will need

DK or light worsted yarn, size 3. About 370 meters or 405 yards for the shawlette and about 800 meters or 875 yards for the full shawl. A 5.0 mm (US H 8) crochet hook. Two stitch markers, a yarn needle and scissors. A tape measure, pins and a flat surface for blocking.

Choosing yarn

A smooth, light colored yarn shows off the lace best. Cotton blends give crisp stitch definition and are lovely for spring and summer. Wool and alpaca blends block beautifully and make a warmer wrap for autumn evenings. Gradient cakes look stunning on a triangle shawl, because the color shifts as the rows grow longer.

Why blocking matters

Lace looks crumpled when it comes off the hook. Blocking is where it opens up. Wet the shawl, pin it to its finished size on a towel or foam mats, and let it dry. The pattern walks you through it step by step, including how to pin the scallops so each shell is even.

Ideas for your shawl

Make a shawlette in cream cotton to wear over a summer dress. Crochet a full shawl in a warm gradient as a gift for a mother or grandmother. Use a fine sparkle yarn for a wedding or evening wrap. Make several shawlettes for a craft fair stall; once you know the repeat, they go quickly.

Wearing your shawl

A triangle shawl is surprisingly versatile. Wear it point down over the shoulders like a classic wrap. Turn it point to the front and loop the ends around your neck for a scarf look. Drape it over one shoulder with a brooch for a more formal outfit. The shawlette size is perfect as a light scarf, while the full shawl is generous enough to wrap around you on a cool evening.

How long will it take?

Rows near the top are short and fly by. Rows get longer as the triangle grows, so the second half of the shawl takes more time than the first. Most beginners finish a shawlette in a couple of weekends of relaxed crocheting, and a full shawl in two to three weeks. The checkpoint tables make it easy to pick up again after a break.
